Best Electric Muscle Stimulator – Top 10 Muscle Stimulators for 2018

Best Electric Muscle stimulators – Top Ten 2018

These won’t break the bank and most have not only TENS capabilities but also EMS

Electric muscle stimulation (EMS) is a proven technique to strengthen muscles, rehab muscles, prevent woman using muscle stim while at ciomputer - best electrical muscle stimulatorsmuscle atrophy and relieve pain. EMS targets motor nerves and TENS targets sensory nerves.

The Tens (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) unit is a nerve stimulator that relieves pain. It is sometimes confused with EMS. However, there is a difference. The Tens unit targets sensory nerves to either release endorphins to relieve pain or block the pain signal altogether.

EMS or Electrical Muscle Stimulation actually contracts muscle tissue. It can strengthen, tone and help muscles heal and recover.

The Flex Belt is an example of an electrical muscle stimulator (EMS) that targets the abdominal area. It is used to tone and strengthen the abdominal muscles.

As a Rehab nurse, I have seen the Physical Therapists use electric muscle stimulation (they call it E-Stim) on patients who had a stroke or injury. The use of the muscle stimulator strengthens the muscle or keeps it from atrophying (weakening and shriveling up from non-use). Sometimes a tens unit is prescribed also but for pain control.

The best electric muscle stimulator is the one that works best to perform the function that you need it for. Whether you need it for pain or for strengthening muscles or maybe you want one that does both.

You will actually get better results for pain relief using a unit that has both TENS and EMS.

However, you also want to be safe when buying an EMS device as there are some that are not FDA approved for safety. Always look for FDA approved devices.

Here are the Top 10 muscle stimulators of 2018 that will do all the functions anyone would need. These electric muscle stimulators are the best because they perform the best for muscle strengthening, rehabilitating muscles, relieving pain, and preventing muscle atrophy.

If you are looking for a TENS  only pain relief unit and not necessarily needing to strengthen and tone your muscles or recover from muscle strain you can find some inexpensive FDA approved TENS Units here.

Note:

If you see advertised on any EMS device that it builds muscle, don’t believe it. In order for your muscle to grow, it needs to have microscopic tears in the muscle. When the muscle repairs itself, it grows. There is also no range of movement with EMS, a range of movement (ROM) is also needed for muscle growth.

Caution: Do not use if you are suffering from a heart condition or if you have a pacemaker or are pregnant. Always check with your medical practitioner and always make sure any TENS or EMS unit you purchase is FDA approved.

TENS and EMS are different. TENS can relieve pain by stimulating nerves to release endorphins to make you feel good or block the pain signal altogether. EMS on the other hand actually causes muscle contraction and can help muscles recover and get stronger. It can also stimulate blood flow.

The best muscle stimulator is a unit that has both TENS and EMS. You will get the best pain control that way. You will want to heal and strengthen your muscles while relaxing your whole body with EMS as well as stop chronic pain with TENS. I believe the best electrical muscle stimulator is one that performs both functions giving you the best pain relief plus rehab.

  1. I have been using a tens unit for the past 8 years for pain associated with Lupus, spinal and other areas of rapid degenerative arthritis. It looks quite outdated compared to the models that you are showing here. I think the one I have is need of an update. They have a come a long way since the time I started using one. I can vouch for them as far as pain therapy goes through. I use it quite often. I do not like pain medications. I like to feel in control of my thoughts and head. So anything that helps eliminate medications for me is a plus. I had never really considered it for muscle strengthening but I am sure that is genuinely what they do as well as the muscles flex. I am positive it has helped my back become stronger over time. I bet these newer types may even be more beneficial. thank you for the update and encouragement to upgrade.

    1. Hi Christina,
Thanks for your comment. I hope your pain level improves more and more each day. I find exercise helps me along with non-inflammatory foods and using the TENS unit with the EMS also is great for reducing inflammation. I am also not a fan of any drugs. Let me know if you any questions about upgrading.

  2. Hi Cynthia,

I was particularly interested in your post because in the past, because of my focus in pain management for the elderly and others, I have explored TENS therapy for back pain relief, and EMS for muscle stimulation. I have encountered questions like what one should do if they have a cochlear implant. I have explained that TENS should not be used on the head or neck. TENS can be used but needs to be 8 inches from the implant: basically any treatment like that needs to be below the shoulder with any grounding below the shoulder. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so always follow instructions carefully and consult with your doctor before using.

That said, even though I have some knowledge about TENS and EMS I didn’t have a comprehensive picture of the differences and uses until I read your post. I think you have done an excellent job in presenting the best options for individual reader’s health and fitness needs. A very helpful and great read. Thanks for sharing.

    Sincerely,

    Thabo

    1. Hi Thabo,
Thanks so much for your great comment. You have added helpful information regarding TENS and cochlear implant. It’s is always good to be safe than sorry. TENS is a great pain relief option for most but always check with your doctor before using especially if you have a medical condition like heart problems and/or a pacemaker too.

  3. Hi Cynthia,
We bought a unit from our physiotherapy office, and we love it. It seems as we get older, we’re needing the pain relief more often, haha.
My husband still plays a lot of sports and is forever pulling something. These units are absolutely wonderful for him to heal faster. We often don’t need the physio anymore. I highly recommend them.
    Cheers,
    Suzanne

    1. Hi Suzanne,
Thank so much for your comment. So glad you can attest to the great pain relieving and recovery benefits of a TENS and EMS unit. They are wonderful devices and there are many people who swear by them. It is great that your husband no longer needs to visit the Physiatrist any longer. That is really wonderful.

  4. Hi Cynthia, I didn’t realize there is a difference in the Tens machines and machines that can tone muscle. My mom really likes and recommends them. Would you recommend one of these products for someone who is mostly stuck at their desk/in front of the computer for helping to tone muscle? Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Tara,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, I believe most people do not really know the difference either. That’s one of the reasons I wanted to point out the differences.
As for your question, You could use an EMS device to firm and tone muscles while at your desk, however, adding some exercise after work would be better. You could do both and get a great benefit.

      1. Thank you for the suggestion. I find it impossible to make time for exercise in my hectic schedule. But this time will pass and then it can be a priority again. I might look into the ems machine to help out in the mean time.

        1. Hi Tara,
You know you can do a quick exercise routine in less than 10 minutes. For instance, do a few jumping jacks then a few more. Do some ab work, leg raises or pushups. These will speed up your metabolism and tone your muscles and make you feel good too! I hope you can fit it in. However, there is benefit to the EMS by itself, but so much more when you add exercise. Good Luck! Let me know how it goes.

  5. As a speech therapist, I have worked with a similar unit on stimulating the muscles needed for swallowing and speaking. I can attest that they are powerful and effective. I love this list and review of so many units that define the best electric muscle stimulator. I’ll be sure to share this around to friends and family.

    1. Hi Laura,
Thanks so much for your comment. I worked closely with speech therapist when I was working as a CRRN. I learned a lot from them as well as the Physical Therapists and occupational therapists. The TENS and EMS were used quite often.
Thank you for enjoying the article and sharing with your friends and family. Please stop by often!

  6. This is a very informative article. I used to think Tens and EMS are the same thing. Thank you for the clarification. I totally need one of those electric muscle stimulators. I really appreciate the detailed explanation of these muscle stimulators. That was very helpful. Which one do you personally use? And which one do you highly recommend?

    1. Hi Hong,
Thanks so much for your comment! Many believe that the TENS and EMS are the same. That is one reason why I chose to write this post.
Do you want to strengthen and tone muscle or just relieve chronic pain? I believe a combination of both is needed for lasting relief. However, you could just use one or the other too. There are people who exercise and like the EMS because it helps your muscles recover quickly.
I use the Irelieve and it’s great but would love to get the Tone-A-Matic. However, my Irelieve works great and I use it often after I workout.

  7. I enjoyed your post very much, I do recommend these products for people with health problems involving their muscles especially cramping and pain. I use the health mate product you recommend and I am very satisfied with this brand, so anyone interested this product is working extremely well for me

    Jeff

    1. Hi Jeff,
Thanks so much for your comment! I also use one (Ireleive) and believe that these units are so beneficial. The Healthmate is a great TENS plus EMS unit and I am so glad you find that is a good brand and that it is working for you and you can recommend it. That’s a great testimonial!

  8. Hi -taCynthia,
What great information! I had no idea.
I bought a EMS about 10 years ago at a flea market, paying about twice what these are! I used it for many years, and it always relieved any ache or sore muscle pain. Because of my great experience, I am going to have to look long and hard at these…
Thank you for such good stuff…BTW, I especially liked your conclusion. So often when I read a review of ten different products, I end up confused and don’t take action. Your summary was really helpful for focus and action-taking!

    Annie

    1. Hi Anne,
Thank you for your comment! You are testimony that these EMS units do work on muscle pain. The TENS plus EMS is the best because you get better pain relief. However, just the EMS works great for sore and aching muscles (which I have when I work out a little too hard). I hope I have helped you decide which one would be the best for you. Let me know which one you pick and how you like it.

  9. You learn something every day. I had never even heard of electric muscle stimulators before. So I suppose that I can use this after a work out to loosen the muscles? Also some state they are good for pain relief. I have plantar fisciitis, would this help relive the pain? Like a massage therapy?

    1. Hi Matts Mom,
Thank you for your comment! Yes! A EMS unit will help you after a workout to loosen tight muscles! It is great for relieving muscle soreness that comes from working out. Yes and a TENS unit can help with plantar ficiitis! The TENS unit would actually stimulate the nerves and block the pain. You would benefit from a combination TENS plus EMS. Some of the units have a massage setting also.

  10. You learn something every day. I had never even heard of electric muscle stimulators before. So I suppose that I can use this after a work out to loosen the muscles? Also some state they are good for pain relief. I have plantar fisciitis, would this help relive the pain? Like a massage therapy?

  11. Hello Cynthia,
I’m back. I just wanted to point to something that confuses some readers about using TENS. TENS therapy look like a really great method of back pain relief. However, here is the confusion. It can be used to relief pain during labor but a lot of doctors say pregnant women should avoid it.

I understand the confusion. Here’s the gist. Tens therapy can help throughout pregnancy and some doctors and midwives use it to lessen the pain of delivery. However, Tens is not recommended if you’re less than 37 weeks pregnant. If ,for example, you are planning a home birth then Tens therapy may make sense. The best advice is to
always ask your doctor. I know you are aware of this, but some women get confused at the mixed messages that they get about TENS. Anyway, excellent article.

    1. Hi Thabo,
Thanks for your comment. You have brought up a great point about pregnancy and the TENS unit for relieving pain. Using a TENS unit during labor is sometimes done. However, it should be a TENS designed especially for this purpose. These are sometimes hard to find in the US. This is a great point and thanks so much for bringing it up!

  12. Hi Cynthia,
Thanks for this post. It’s amazing to read about how advanced the Tens is now. 17 years ago, I was in labour and Tens was put on me for pain relief. Maybe my pain was too much for it then. I did not feel any relief. Reading your post, I’m sure they are made to ease labour pains now. Thanks Cynthia, Keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Juliet,
Thanks so much for your comment. Yes, I think TENS units are better now. However, everyone feels pain differently so it is possible that your pain was just too severe. The pads also have to be placed in the right areas too. You need to have it on from the very start of labour also.

  13. My brother has used a TENS device for several years. I never knew there was so many choices. As I get older, every thing I do makes something hurt. Could one of these dual devices TENS and EMS work for pain from yard or garage work. How well does the rechargeable batteries hold up on these devices.
Thanks for the information and choices on these muscle stimulators.
    John

    1. Hi John,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, nowadays there are just so many choices in everything sometimes it can make your head spin! The EMS is effective for sore muscles from any activity so yes, it would work for pain from yard and garage work. The batteries usually hold up through a few sessions on most. Some units have replaceable batteries and some units have built in lithium batteries.

  14. Thank you Cynthia for a great review. I have a TENS that was given to me several years ago by a chiropractor I was seeing to fix back problems I was having while driving a truck. I was one who didn’t know the difference and thought a TENS and EMS were the same.
My wife and I attended a Home Show recently and someone selling these had a booth, so of course me, I believe everyone, bought one. I can see now, I should quit using it! It did seem to help my back, but from reading your post, I may be doing more harm than good.
Have bookmarked your website and going to come back for further study.
Thanks and best to you. Wayne

    1. Hi Wayne,
Thanks so much for your comment. The tENS unit you received from the chiropractor was most likely one that was FDA approved. However, you say that you bought one from a booth at a Home Show. check the packaging and call the manufacturer to find out if it is FDA approved. It is helping your pain so that is good, but it is really best to be safe. Let me know and if you have any questions. Thanks!

  15. What great information! I really had no idea that TENS units had come so far. I also didn’t know there was a difference between TENS and EMS units. Thanks for clarifying. I know years ago that TENS units were prescribed by physicians. It’s great to know that anyone in pain can now purchase directly. You have offered some great products. I love the idea that there is massage therapy too! Sounds like anyone with muscle pain could benefit from one of these units.

    1. Hi Brenda,
Thanks for your comment. I really like the TENS and EMS units you can purchase today. It is great that anyone can get one of these and benefit. The units with massage therapy are great as sometimes we just need a little of that!

Yes, these TENS and EMS units are great for anyone with muscle pain. The EMS units can also tone muscles. The EMS units are my favorite.

      Cynthia
